As Mothers' Day fast approaches, I ponder the unique experience of motherhood. No one could have prepared me for the overpowering and all encompassing love I felt for my baby when she finally arrived in my arms. I remember gazing at her, and feeling at once both a completion of self and a loss of self. As the days, weeks, and years fly by, there have been endless showers missed, meals grown cold or uneaten, sleepless nights, and entertainment forgone for the sake of my darling daughter... and I LOVED every minute of it!

Little Gems is collecting diapers (in opened and unopened packages) for Help A Mother Out in an effort to raise awareness and the necessary supplies to help out the many families in the Bay Area who are struggling to make ends meet.

Little Gems is now offering a new Charity Fund-raising component to our Trunk Shows. Some Background on why Diapers Drives are Needed:
In today's economic climate, there is a very thin line dividing those who are 'down and out' and those who are 'struggling to stay afloat'. I call it family. If you lose your job, and deplete your savings paying for your expenses while searching for work, what happens when your savings is gone? Who can you turn to? For many, we have extended family who will loan us money, house us, or do whatever is needed for as long as it takes to get back up on your feet.

But let's face it, millions of people are struggling right now, and many cannot afford to help their extended family or friends when emergencies hit. So they seek assistance from the public safety net. Unfortunately, the public programs have had their budgets slashed, causing drastic reductions in services offered. So let's say, for example, that we're a family with babies in diapers... and we lost our jobs last year; and are receiving Food Stamps to buy food... did you know you can't buy diapers, toiletries, and other necessities with that? CPSIA and Me - Part I

What are Mothering Rocks? Why do I care about the CPSIA? What is the meaning of life? I will discuss several of these ideas in this blog post, if not all of them. You see, my life revolves around my darling daughter. When she was a baby, I left my alcoholic ex-husband to forge a new life for ourselves. Instead of going back to work in the software industry, where I had previously been employed, I decided to start my own business and work from home. I had grand dreams and envisioned cuddling, breastfeeding, playing, and changing diapers by day, and making jewelry by night. A mini-revolution of sorts.

The jewelry I designed was baby friendly, eco-friendly, and of course, gorgeous to look at and wear. I invented the loop-style nursing necklace, as a way to engage babies while nursing. Babies by nature are curious, and often pull, pinch, grab anything and everything within reach. So the Little Gems Mothering Rocks nursing necklaces are a way for moms to wear beautiful jewelry (and feel human again) while providing something safe and soothing for baby to explore. Soon, business was booming, and while I was a preschool teacher by day with my kiddo by my side, I spent my lunch break checking email, finishing up orders, packaging orders, and often walking to the post office.

As my business grew, my production processes also expanded to handle the capacity. I began buying in bulk, embarked on expensive advertising campaigns, and of course, investing everything I was making to continue to grow my business. As an environmentalist (yes, I'm old school and have considered myself an environmentalist since the 1980's), I ensured that my gems, silver, and components were all baby safe and eco-friendly. No weird dyes or chemicals used in my hand-made production.

Several years later, in 2007 the price of oil hits new highs. I noticed a huge drop in my sales volume. But I can hang tough, after all, I can roll with the punches. Soon however, it became clear that business was still falling dramatically. By the time the country finally admitted that we were in a recession, I had gotten a second job to make ends meet. But I wasn't going to give up. Not me.

Then the CPSIA was enacted, with all of the fanfare of a royal proclamation. The idea behind the CPSIA I do support; it is supposed to ensure that our country's children are safe from lead and pthalates. However, the way it was written was so restricting while ambiguous... it is over-arching and basically groups small home businesses of hand-crafting artisans with huge monoliths like Mattel. We all must test all products for children under 12, in the same manner. The economies of scale for the big manufacturers ensures they will be able to survive with these testing procedures. However, the expensive testing, tracking, and labeling requirements of the CPSIA is putting hundreds (heck let's face it, thousands ) of small businesses out of business. In an economic climate that mirrors in some ways the Great Depression, this is no time to cut jobs, especially when the reason is because of a poorly written law.

Sigh. Catch your breath while I catch mine. Part II will be written soon and continue this sad tale.

Hi Everyone,

As the school year winds down, many of us are already jumping ahead to planning our summers. I know that my daughter and I are looking forward to spending some quality time hanging out at home together. For those of you who haven't been keeping up with the latest updates about the CPSIA, where the heck have you been? I mean really, why can't you keep up with the new exemptions, request for comments, changes of interpretation, etc. that have been occurring every few days?

For those of you who don't know what the CPSIA is, please listen to a blog radio show I participated in; there's lots of details.

So the latest update is that the CPSC is now requesting comments on which products should be exempted from the Phthalate testing. All comments must be received within 30 days from their request; March 13. There is actually a chance I might survive this mess; seeing that Phthalates are used to manufacture plastics, and I don't use plastic in my designs... we'll see what they decide.

I swear, I feel like I'll get whiplash from all of these turning of events.

I'm also feeling a bit torn about the current request to also grant exemptions for rhinestones, crystal, etc. with regards to the lead testing. Their reasoning is that if a child swallowed a rhinestone or crystal from their jewelry, picture frame, or clothing it would be exposing them to less than the amount of lead that they currently are already eating... if they are eating certain canned fruits and veggies, packaged brownies, and other processed foods! WHAT??? I can't wrap my head around that logic! How is it ok for lead to be present in food?!

I'm still not sure what to think, aside from just being glad that I buy my fruits and veggies at my local farmer's market, and we eat mostly unprocessed and fresh food.

Not that I'm saying those exemptions shouldn't be in place; but I'm kind of wondering what the FDA has been allowing to go on!

Paradigm Shift

I’ll never forget my first foray into Environmental Activism. It was the summer of 1990, and I was 17 years old. Those magical years when we think we are invincible and able to win every battle just because we believe in it so strongly. I canvassed neighborhoods with CALPIRG, going door to door gathering signatures to get California’s Big Green Initiative on the ballot. According to NewScientist.com, “Big Green would have been the most far-reaching environmental law ever passed. It would have phased out carcinogenic pesticides, banned oil drilling in coastal areas, promoted tree-planting, and cut emissions of carbon dioxide by 40 per cent within 20 years.” We were well on our way to saving the world… until my innocence crashed into reality and the ballot lost by a margin of almost 2 to 1. How could the public not care about the carcinogens being pumped into our food, air, and water? How can the world face the impending doom of Global Climate Change in such a blasé manner?

Flash forward 17 years… the public finally cares! Not only do they care, but they are willingly adopting incremental ways of lowering the CO2 emissions, like buying hybrid cars, buying locally produced food and goods, and supporting companies who adopt ecologically sound business practices. As I watch Zoe and Allison embark on their tremendous expedition on Chasing Glaciers, I realize that our world is balancing on a precipice. As the glaciers are melting, so are the assumptions that our resources will always be there to squander. We are entering a brave new world where consumers are becoming more conscious of how our products are being produced.

On July 7, Live Earth the Concerts for a Climate in Crisis will be underway. 24 hours of concerts will take place around the globe by some of the world’s most popular artists. I take heart that now that our popular culture is embracing the need to take action on the environmental crisis of Global Climate Change, perhaps we have more than a snowball’s chance of getting out of here alive!

What's Done is Done

After a whirlwind of shopping and preparing, I appeared on Good Day Sacramento yesterday. Let me just say that the shopping and make-over done by my friends was exhausting. I still have clothes to take back to the stores, when I don't know. Somehow I got talked into buying a sweater that I thought was lined with faux fur. Well, the night before the show (when I had to get up at 5am to leave by 6am to get there in time) I discovered that it was Rabbit Fur! I was, and still am, horrified. I would never knowingly purchase Rabbit Fur, never. I can barely bring myself to touch it to put it back in the bag to take it back to the store. The kicker is that I'm freakin' allergic to Rabbits!!! I had started sneezing and everything by the time I discovered the truth. did I mention it was horrifying?

The show was a wonderful experience though, and very enlightening as to what it is like behind the scenes of a TV news show. My friend's friend saw the show and said that I looked good, and my friend heard me on speakerphone and said I sounded good... but until I actually see the piece I'm still worried that I really messed it up.

I was told to look at the interviewer and not the camera, and I couldn't help but look at the camera while talking about my jewelry in front of me. Then, when asked to show how the necklace cord adjusted, it got a little bit stuck, and I struggled for a few seconds. sigh. I wish I could do it over, but alas, what's done is done.

Like I said though, it was a good experience, and luckily it was FUN! But the whole Rabbit Fur debacle... did I mention it was horrifying?!

This gorgeously delicate necklace is currently on sale now. I only have 1 Evening Rose Mothering Rocks necklace left, and cannot make more.

Sad, but true. The Tourmaline that was used in this design is out of stock, and currently unavailable. There is however, a little bit more Rose Quartz, so there is a bit of hope for a few more of this design someday. This last necklace is strung on a pink cotton cord, but can be restrung on a different color as well.

Buy it before I change my mind and decide that I must keep it. I have a sneaking suspicion that I will find myself keeping 1 of each design, and I may as well start with this one. :)
